This is - without a doubt - the best work ever written/published that defines the differences between all the various operating systems and their respective requirements, cults, mindsets, and technologies; and more importantly, their implications for programmers and system engineers today and forever. This may have been written in 1999, but it's as applicable today as it was a decade ago, and probably will be another decade or two from now.
