I know Jehovah's witnesses who don't even get offended when people say Merry Christmas to them because they know that the person is trying to be kind and wish them well and there is NOTHING wrong with that.

"but nothing in Islam's holy book denies the status of Jesus as the Son of God. Islam states only that behaviour dictated by God through the last prophet should be followed ahead of the words of Jesus, as Mohammed brought the word of God more recently than Jesus. It's simply a matter of timing."

You're very very wrong. To begin with, YES there are PLENTY of references in the Quran that state that Allah has no partner or children and that Jesus is NOT his son. Furthermore, the main principle in Islam is that Allah is the only God with no other, and that He does not need any partner or child.

Thank you ag and george.
When wishing someone well--even someone of a different faith--becomes wrong, then society has gone wrong. Everyone should be able to enjoy the spirit of Christmas, whether or not they believe in its religious meaning.
For most people, Christmas is largely the modern celebration of the Roman Saturnalia. Only a minority of "Christians" celebrate it for its religious significance.

i also agree. i hate the awkwardness of starting to say "Merry Christmas" and then having to correct myself. thanks for discussing this issue.

Bill, I agree with you. I'm not a Christian, and I possess very strong feelings about the separation between church and state. Nevertheless, I think that the political correctness movement has gone too far in this case. I have no problem with wishing others a Merry Christmas, even though I do not believe in the story of Christmas.
