Amazing essay! I thought that it really drew attention to the conservative status quo of society as a whole, and how children have been and continue to be such targets as the pawns of the rich. I happen to be just as much as if nor more of a Miyazaki proponent/Disney dissident, so I ask if I can link to your essay from my blog (it's very relevent to the subject matter). I would only be linking to this iPaper, so there wouldn't be a way for me to take credit, even I wanted to. I found this page while arguing about Disney vs. Miyazaki myself. Also, great writing in general!

Princess Mononoke is one of the few movies I talk about in this essay that I have not yet seen, although I want to see it. I got my information from that movie from other sources and I probably misread something that confused Ashitaka with Mononoke. Thanks for the correction.

I think you do a good job here of drawing attention to the worrisome cultural differences in media, specifically those aimed at children. I just have one correction: In the appendix at the end you say Ashitaka was a female protagonist seeking peaceful resolution... half of that is true. See, that character is actually PRINCE Ashitaka. Peaceful, yes, female, no. The female in that movie is Princess Mononoke herself, and she actually initiates guerilla attacks with the wolves on the mining town. She is a strong character, who paints herself with blood (literally).
