Description

This is my introductory essay to the American Political Conservatism group. Here I survey the various types of American conservatives, differentiate between American conservatism and European conservatism, describe fundamental beliefs, and apply them to specific political issues.

A full description of human nature and how America as a free society fulfills it far better than the others may be one way to underpin the argument. That has the makings of another essay. Hmmmmm

This is a good start. I agree with your positions, and think this is a fine paper. that said, I do have a few constructive criticisms. Try to emphasize more, the deep logical underpinnings that tie these precepts together. Kirk recognized that conservatism cannot be an 'ideology' like Liberalism is; rather it is more of an intellectual 'world view', based on a set of core tenets, that are both related logically to each other AND representative of the view that conservatives on the whole see the good in the current order, and recognize that, more often than not, 'inorganic' radical change is for the worse. I think emphasizing these aspects will make an even more compelling argument, augmenting the good job you have already done.

Thanks for your kind comments, b6en

Thank you for defining these. I definitely find myself in the religious, constitutional and economic conservative categories.

Thanks Oren2012. Here's some more grist for the conservative mill: Read Hayek, von Mises, Jane Jacobs (great on economic self organization of cities), Adam Smith and Milton Friedman on economics, Russell Kirk on this history of conservative philosophy, William Buckley--anything he had written, Charles Krauthammer and Victor Davis Hanson (on foreign affairs), Burke and Madison on governance, Tocqueville on America, etc. Run searches on such phrases as "American conservatism" or "conservative philosophy" on-line and see how many thousands of interesting results you get. The Liberty Fund also has a great on-line conservative library. It's free!

This is a great essay. I'm a freshmen in a NH highschool and after reading this essay i felt very confirmed of my "American Conservative" views. It really nailed every topic on the dot. Now, since most of the ignorant kids at my school are liberals (as i found out during the election season) I will have plenty of facts to throw at them.
